I Love You Like the Cowboys Love the Redskins

(above) Condoleezza Rice expressing how much she values Jewish lives

The AP reports: JERUSALEM - Prodded by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Israel and the Palestinians agreed Tuesday on details for opening the borders of the Gaza Strip and allowing freer movement for Palestinians elsewhere, a significant step toward an eventual peace deal between historic enemies. The agreement, which gives the Palestinians control over a border for the first time, took all-night negotiations and a strong diplomatic shove from Rice. The basic elements of the deal had been in the works for weeks. "I have to say as a football fan, sometimes the last yard is the hardest, and I think we experienced that today," Rice told a news conference where she announced the agreement. Tovya says: Let me answer these problematic statements with a few questions. (A) Why is it that everytime I hear the words “historic” and “peace” in the same sentence I automatically see it as a sign that more Jews are about to be murdered? (B) Why do I fear that the phrase “diplomatic shove” means that Israel just got screwed again? (C) Why the hell is Ms. Rice comparing mideast politics to American football? The answers to these puzzling questions… (A) Because to the world, it’s always a historic moment when they get to see more dead Jews. More importantly, every time a Jew is killed, Condi starts screaming for Israel to “stop the cycle of violence”. It’s always Israel’s fault when a Jew dies… the Palestinians are always seen as the victims of “Zionist aggression”. For more on this, please see my article concerning translating State Department rhetoric. (B) Once again we are giving everything, and the Arabs are giving nothing but more empty promises. The U.S. Government knows this, and yet they do nothing. The U.S. State Department has been giving Israel the shaft for 57 years, so why should they stop now? (C) Because Ms. Rice thinks that Jewish lives are a game. We have always been the scapegoats of Western ambition, and it is our fault not theirs. We let the Americans and Europeans push us around because we are infected with the shtetl sickness. We faced persecution daily under the world's thumb while we were in exile, and now that we are free, we invite them into our own country to continue their pogroms.
